Gingival fibroblast cells are the most abundant and principal structural cells found within the connective tissue of the gingiva (gum tissue) in the oral cavity. They play a fundamental role in maintaining oral homeostasis, structural tissue integrity, and wound healing. Under a microscope, they typically feature an adherent, spindle-shaped, or star-shaped structural morphology. : They actively produce and remodel essential structural proteins—including collagen types I and III, elastin, and glycosaminoglycans—giving the gums their mechanical strength and physical resilience.: Unlike skin cells, gingival fibroblasts retain distinct "fetal-like" properties, allowing them to migrate rapidly and repair tissue without forming visible scar tissue.: They act as cellular sentinels that detect invading oral pathogens. When exposed to bacteria, they secrete regulatory cytokines (like IL-6 and IL-8) and chemokines to safely coordinate local immune cell responses.
Gingival fibroblast cells are identified using a combination of general mesenchymal markers, extracellular matrix proteins, and surface antigens. They typically express vimentin, fibronectin, and standard mesenchymal stem cell markers like CD90 and CD73, while lacking hematopoietic or endothelial markers.
